Centre County sees decreasing trend in COVID-19 cases as PA reports record high numbers

As COVID-19 cases are spiking nationwide and in most of our region, in Centre County, it's been bit of a different story.

When the county paid close to $250,000 to open a free COVID-19 testing center at the Nittany Mall last week, it was expected about 300 people a day would be tested.

So far, that’s not the case, not even close, as the daily testing average has been about 125 people.

Thursday, county officials said they'll probably make a decision next week on how long the center will be open.

It reflects a recent trend in Centre County: Less daily cases being reported than from weeks before.

Thursday's total was 55 cases.

There has been concern though at the Mount Nittany Medical Center with the COVID-19 patient counts.

Thursday it’s listed at 18 patients.

Earlier this week on Facebook, the facility's chief medical officer said for most recent patients, the severity of the virus has been less, and they haven’t had more than one or two patients on ventilators at one time.

At Penn State, case counts at University Park are also down from initial reports.

The university is urging all students who will soon be leaving as classes end on campus, to schedule an appointment for free COVID-19 testing that Penn State is offering before heading home.
