As Penn State football prepares to return, so does the stadium's cleanup crew & its recycling policy

With Penn State football opening its season this Saturday night at Beaver Stadium, fans will once again be asked to get familiar with the blue and clear plastic bags that have become a fixture outside of the stadium.

Outside Beaver Stadium, dozens of recycling stations are already in place with the same policy for fans and trash. Blue bags for cans and bottles, clear bags for everything else.

“There should be no changes. One thing we encountered last year, unexpectedly, was the sale of adult beverages inside the bowl of the stadium. If people are doing that, we’re going to have crews coming through the following morning, making sure the cans and bottles are separate from the trash.”

With up to 150,000 people in the stadium parking lots on gameday, those blue and clear bags collect a huge number of items, generally in the neighborhood of 10 tons of material every game, and there's more when it’s a night game, like this coming Saturday.

The thousands of recycling bags are collected the day after the game, and Penn State says by fans using the bags, it’s huge savings in the postgame cleanup costs.
