JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- A Johnstown plastic surgeon pleaded guilty Friday to two felony counts of Medicaid and insurance fraud.

Dr. Daniel R. Nevarre was sentenced to six to 23 months of house arrest, followed by three years of probation.

“When people commit Medicaid fraud, they’re stealing tax dollars from people who are in real need of health care services,” Attorney General Josh Shapiro said.

Nevarre was the owner and operator of Plastic Surgical Associates of Johnstown until its sale in May 2017. Shapiro said Nevarre bilked private insurers out of $288,974.

The attorney general said starting in 2010, Nevarre billed all tissue samples as cancerous, even though subsequent lab reports indicated they were not, and that he up-coded routine procedures near the eye as complex in order to get higher reimbursements.

As a condition of his sentence, Nevarre was ordered to pay full restitution to the providers.
