BELLEFONTE, Pa. (WJAC) — History has shown times of crisis can lead to creative ways to help others.
In recent weeks, we've seen several manufacturing operations switching gears to produce goods that are in high demand and short supply.
Big Spring Spirits in Bellefonte is known for its ready to drink craft cocktails and spirits, but in recent days they've added a new mix here: a recipe for hand sanitizer.
How's it made? The workers use the waste product from the distilling process with other ingredients.
"We'll stop making whiskey for the time being and just produce hand sanitizer," said distillery owner Kevin Lloyd.
Right now the new sanitizer is being given to emergency responders, police and fire departments all free of charge.
"We're trying to provide it free," Lloyd said. "But now there's more demand, and we'll see what we can do."
Another issue Lloyd said the distillery faces is getting enough bottles for the "Ain't Got No Sink Hand Sanitizer" bottles. Lloyd said they're in short supply, but the company is working to get more.
