CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Hundreds of people will gather this weekend in Johnstown to walk with a purpose. The Johnstown Walk of Hope will help ease the burden cancer patients in our region face by raising money to help cover the cost of life saving care they need.
You can grab your walking shoes and head over to Trojan stadium at 9 Saturday morning to join in the walk, no registration is required and the walk will end at 1pm. This is the 5th year the Johnstown Walk of Hope has been held and 100% of the proceeds will stay in the area and go to local cancer patients.
“It can be medications, insurance deductibles, we've paid mortgages, car repair bills, we put a lift chair in someone’s home so that they could stay in their home while they were having treatment so we encompass a whole lot of different needs for patients,” said Marlene Singer a volunteer with the Johnstown Walk of Hope.
Marlene Singer a volunteer with the Johnstown Walk of Hope says funds go to cancer patients who receive treatment at the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center, Conemaugh Cancer Center and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Last year the walk went virtual because of the pandemic and Singer says they’re excited people can walk together safely this year. If you’re not much of a walker or only have an hour to spare Singer says you don’t have to stay all day Saturday, any time is appreciated.
Before the walk on Saturday people will gather at Trojan Stadium Friday at dusk to recognize the support given by caregivers and offer support to those in treatment. Singer says they’ll then light a candle in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to cancer.
You can donate to the cause here. To date the Johnstown Walk of Hope has received over 300 requests for assistance and been able to put $120,000 towards helping others.
