UPMC announced Wednesday that the hospital system is planning to lay off approximately 1,000 employees/positions, citing ongoing "post-pandemic challenges."

In a statement, UPMC says that the healthcare industry as a whole continues to be impacted by the "still evolving, post-pandemic marketplace."

Officials say the layoffs will likely come in the form of closing open positions or eliminating certain "non-clinical" staff members.

"To ensure that UPMC continues to thrive as a leading, successful health care organization, limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system primarily among non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other actions," the statement says in part.

UPMC says that the over 1% of its employees who will be impacted will receive "enhanced severance pay and benefits."

UPMC officials did not specify when the layoffs would begin or what specific locations would be impacted.

The entire health care industry continues to face the realities of a still-evolving, post-pandemic marketplace. UPMC is responding to these challenges and opportunities while remaining true to its mission of providing exceptional care for patients, employees, members, and communities. To ensure that UPMC continues to thrive as a leading, successful health care organization, limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system primarily among non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other actions. This realignment will not alter UPMC’s investments in our communities, facilities, commitment to clinical care and research, strategic growth, or to offering those throughout our workforce industry-leading benefits. Because these decisions will be difficult for affected employees, enhanced severance pay and benefits coverage is being provided. These actions impact a little more than 1% of the staff members throughout UPMC’s 100,000+ workforce across its businesses systemwide.
