PUNXSUTAWNEY - Ten local pizzerias and organizations in Jefferson County will team up this weekend to create a 400-square-foot pizza.

The event is being held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Punxsutawney Area Community Center.

But the pizza challenge will also be a practice run and send-off for the owner of Punxsy Pizza, Scott Anthony.

Anthony, representing Punxsutawney, will head to California on April 9 to help break the Longest Pizza World Record for Guinness World Records.

He is the only person from Pennsylvania participating.

The April 9 challenge will be an attempt to make a pizza that's over a mile long and weighs 17,200 pounds.

"Two years ago, the world record was set in Naples, Italy, so the Italians currently own the record," Anthony said. "It's a little bit of rivalry there and the Americans want to take it back."

The 20-by-2-foot pizza will be made Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the PACC.

Slices can be purchased for $1, with all proceeds going to benefit the PACC. Unsold slices will be donated to local shelters.

Participants include Punxsy Pizza, IUP Culinary School, The New Anchor Inn, Laska's Pizza, Hoover's Subs & More, Pizza Town, The Groundhog Club and Fox's Pizza Den.
