COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Today marks two years since mother and son Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were murdered at their Moselle Road home.
The murders quickly triggered a cascade of investigations and revelations, capturing the eye of the nation.
Earlier this year, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife and child.

The 52-year-old mother 22-year-old son were killed on June 7, 2021.
Alex Murdaugh reported their deaths in a now-infamous 911 call just after 10 p.m. that evening.
Cell-phone and GPS evidence presented in his murder trial showed Alex arriving at the Moselle property at 6:42 p.m. with Paul following shortly after.

It was alleged Alex was sleeping from 8:09 to around 9 p.m. Investigators believe Maggie and Paul were murdered around 8:50 p.m.
However, a video from Paul's cell phone presented in court placed Alex at the kennels with his wife and son at 8:44 p.m.
Colleton County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Chapman was one of the first people on scene. He's since explained how he believes the murder took place.

"It started with Paul and it went sideways. And a shotgun was used then Maggie come running to Paul's aid and (Alex) has to find another weapon," Chapman said in an interview. "You see (Alex) looking around it’s a good example of him collecting information rather than providing."
Alex is now serving time in the Mccormick Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison.
He is still awaiting trial in state court on more than 99 financial crimes, and last week pleaded not guilty to 22 more federal charges of a similar nature.

June 7, 2021, AlexMurdaugh murders his wife Maggie and son Paul at their home in Colleton County.
September 2021, Murdaugh arrested on charges related to insurance fraud from a roadside shooting incident that turned out to be a botched assisted suicide scheme. The roadside shooting followed the discovery of Murdaugh's long-running theft, embezzlement, fraud and money laundering schemes victimizing his clients, friends and law firm.
Murdaugh was fired from his family law firm the day before the shooting, and his law license was suspended the next week. He entered drug rehab for opioid addiction after leaving the hospital and being arrested.
October 2021, Murdaugh arrested again, charged with the initial spate of charges related to his stealing or misappropriating nearly $9 million over the course of 10 years from 2011 to 2021. Judge Clifton Newman did not grant Murdaugh bond pending a psych evaluation, and he has not walked free a day since.
November 2021, Murdaugh's assets frozen by Judge Daniel Hall because attorneys for Murdaugh's various victims discovered Murdaugh and his family members trying to liquidate and hide his assets. Meantime, Judge Newman upheld his order of no bond following Murdaugh's psych exam. Also in November, a state grand jury returned five indictments and 27 charges against Murdaugh related to his financial crimes.
December 2021, the State Grand Jury indicts Murdaugh for 21 new charges tied to his financial crimes.
January 2022, the State Grand Jury brought 23 new charges against Murdaugh for financial crimes.
March 2022, State Grand Jury brings 4 new charges against Murdaugh for financial crimes, plus 18 charges against Cory Fleming.
May 2022, State Grand Jury brings 20 charges against Russell Laffitte.
June 2022, State Grand Jury charges Murdaugh and Eddie Smith with drug and financial crimes.
July 2022, Murdaugh indicted for murders of wife and son by Colleton County grand jury. Murdaugh pleads not guilty. Russell Laffitte indicted on federal bank fraud charges, first federal charges in case.
August 2022, Murdaugh, Jerry Rivers and Spencer Roberts indicted on new charges tied to drugs and Eddie Smith. Also, Russell Laffitte indicted on a new state charge for financial crimes.
November 2022, jury finds Russell Laffitte guilty on all 6 federal fraud, conspiracy and misappropriation charges.

January 2023, Murdaugh state murder trial begins in Colleton County.
