SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — A woman from Somerset County is making a difference for animals at a local shelter.
She started a fundraiser to raise money to buy toys and food for the Humane Society of Somerset County.
Lana Kobuck decided this year, instead of receiving presents for her birthday, she would ask her friends and family to donate money so she could buy presents for the cats and dogs at the Humane Society of Somerset County. She did not expect it to take off like it did.
"I had set up a birthday fundraiser online. I thought maybe there would be enough to get the older dogs a bed and the other dogs a blanket or a toy, and treats. We set the goal to $250 and it ended up bringing in a couple thousand dollars."
With the money donated, Kobuck purchased items for the 27 dogs and 54 cats at the humane society.
People who work there were shocked to see such a large donation.
"She donated beds, toys, food, it was an incredible amount. This room was almost to the ceiling,” said Humane Society of Somerset County manager, Nancy Dantzig.
Dantzig says the humane society heavily relies on donations: big or small.
"A good 90% we are lucky we get a lot of donations but it's been a while since we've gotten one of the magnitude. It was pretty incredible,” said Dantzig.
And Kobuck hopes she can organize something like this again in the future.
"It's something we want to look forward to do every year now. We want to call it the Santa’s snuggle up for the shelters and pick the shelter. But next year hopefully we'll have like six weeks to throw it together,” said Kobuck.
