Franklin Borough exits Act 47

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development announced on Tuesday that Franklin Borough’s status as a distressed municipality under Act 47 has been terminated. The purpose of Act 47, or the Municipality financial recovery act, is to provide help with fiscal management, planning as well as financial aid. The borough initially entered the program due to distress that can be traced back to the 1977 Johnstown flood and then the 1988 collapse of the steel industry.

Golden Basket Chef competition is back, and focused on helping local farmers

BOALSBURG, Pa. – Happy Valley's top chef will be crowned this weekend in the Golden Basket Finals. The event is a collaboration of local farmers markets and it's about more than just competition. Centre Markets, Appalachian Food Works and the Downtown State College Improvement District are working together to make this event happen. Organizers say the goal is to shine a light on local farmers and chefs and give some attention to the groups that normally do most of their work behind the scenes.

New video shows murder convict Danelo Cavalcante escaping Pennsylvania prison

WASHINGTON (TND) — Newly released video from Chester County Prison in Pennsylvania shows a murder convict scaling a wall to escape the facility. The footage was made public Wednesday, which marked seven days since 34-year-old Danelo Cavalcante has been at large. He escaped on August 31 shortly after 8:50 a.m. In the video, Cavalcante is seen standing near a doorway between two walls in the prison's outdoor exercise yard. He then starts crab-walking between the two walls, his hands on one wall and his feet on the other, while parallel to the ground.

Unclaimed remains of two Centre Co. veterans to be moved to Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Centre County administrators this week had the difficult task of deciding how to best honor a couple of military veterans. For a few veterans, their passing isn’t followed with a funeral service as sometimes their remains go unclaimed. That’s the story for two veterans who died in the county. The county coroners, and veterans’ affairs offices researched possible outcomes, saying they didn’t want the veterans forgotten.

'We couldn't be happier:' Mountain Lion Backpack program provides update on community donations

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — In October, the board of the Mountain Lion Backpack Program in Altoona issued a plea to the community for donations to help keep the effort going. The program, which sends food home with over 1,100 children in need during the school year, is facing the same kind of economic hardships that we are all facing: inflation. In an update, the program manager provided some positive news about the community’s response.
